The Myers Cocktail

by David Wikenheiser

Are you tired, stressed out, physically and emotionally running on empty? Are you fighting an infection and on the verge of getting really sick? Then you may benefit from a Myers Cocktail injection.

The Myers Cocktail is a formula of vitamins and minerals made popular by the Baltimore medical doctor John Myers. While popular with Dr. Myers patients the outside world did not know about this innovative treatment until he retired and Dr. Alan Gaby took over his practice. Dr. Gaby, who later went on to become the founding president of the American Wholistic Medical Association, and a full Professor of Nutrition at Bastyr University of Natural Medicine, is an outspoken advocate for natural medicine and intravenous vitamin and mineral treatments. As Dr. Gaby has lectured he was amazed at how many of Dr. Myers patients came into the office wanting the vitamin mineral treatment.

I was introduced to intravenous vitamins and minerals as part of my naturopathic medical training. We covered many different formulas, including the Myers Cocktail. I have used this formula, as well as many others, with great success for many different health concerns since receiving my Naturopathic Medical license in 1995.

The Myers Cocktail is a safe and effective formula of vitamins and minerals. The Myers Cocktail contains magnesium, calcium, vitamin B complex, extra vitamin B 5 and B 6, as well as vitamin B 12. Some doctors like to add in vitamin C but I find that it is best given as part of a different intravenous treatment. The vitamins and minerals in this combination are liquid preparations prepared by compounding pharmacists for use by licensed doctors. Each part of the Myers Cocktail are drawn up into a syringe and delivered into a patients vein by way of a fine needle over a time period of anywhere from ten to twenty minutes.

Intravenous vitamins and minerals are effective support for the body because they are 100 % delivered to the body. There are no absorption concerns because they go straight into the blood stream. For example, vitamin C levels will go as much as 40 times higher in the blood when given intravenously as compared to given orally and absorbed in the intestinal tract.

The Myers Cocktail is safe because it is made up of water soluble vitamins and minerals. Because they are water soluble any excess will not build up in your body but will be removed in your urine.

Patients have reported many different reactions to a Myers Cocktail injection. The most common reaction is the taste or smell of B vitamins. This is a good thing. As the level of B vitamins rises in the blood stream you can taste them. If someone is run down and low in B vitamins they may not taste the Bs at all since their cells throughout their body take up the vitamins so fast they don’t go high enough in the blood stream for your smell and taste sensors to react. As the reserve of B vitamins rises in your body they are taken up from your blood stream more slowly, their level rises in your blood stream, and the B vitamin taste increases.

Another group of reactions are caused by the mineral magnesium. Magnesium is a cofactor for many enzyme systems in your body. Enzymes control chemical reactions. When you have enough magnesium you make energy more efficiently, heal faster, pump blood more efficiently, remain calm when everyone else is not, and in general feel great. Unfortunately most people are deficient in magnesium. Magnesium depleted soil has led to magnesium depleted foods. Devitalized processed foods have led to mineral deficiencies, including magnesium deficiencies. Most people are magnesium deficient.

With the Myers Cocktail you know you are getting enough magnesium when your blood vessels start to dilate, allowing greater blood flow. Your face and hands start to get warm, your mind gets very calm, your tummy starts to gurgle, and some people have even felt as if they wet their pants.

Intravenous vitamins and minerals in general, and the Myers Cocktail in particular are effective support for people who are leading busy and active lives and who don’t want to be slowed down by exhaustion and infections. Consider intravenous vitamins as part of your personal health program.
